Press abandonment waste

Chieti, January 24, 2009

PRESSRELEASE

The Department for Ecology and Environment of the Municipality of Chieti, Bassam El Zohbi, issued the following statement.

"Today, during one of my speed control on the territory of the city, I was able to find the existence of three bins of used lubricating oil left abandoned on the roadside in Via degli Equi in Chieti, in full residential center.

All this despite the fact that the City Administration has started the last year to set environmental policies homeland defense and public health.

fact, used lubricating oils, from industry and the automotive sector, are a valuable material if properly treated and recycled.

But their improper and inappropriate elimination, as in the case of Via degli Equi, causing major damage of pollution for the environment and public health since these products are highly carcinogenic.

In this regard I reiterate that the provisions of the law on this matter are very clear, it is prohibited:

- any discharge of waste oils into inland surface waters, groundwater, in territorial waters and drainage systems;

- any deposit or discharge of waste oils have adverse effects on the soil and any uncontrolled discharge of residues resulting from treatment of waste oils;

- any processing of waste oils causing air pollution which exceeds the level prescribed by existing legislation.

So, in case of deposit and / or discharge of used oils that have harmful effects on the soil or water, the penalties are up to the arrest two years or a fine ranging from 2,560 to 10,330 Euro.

Since the law states that "consumers are not allowed to proceed to the direct disposal of waste oils", the town council took steps to provide public service for the disposal of waste oils free of charge.

At the Ecological Island Chieti Scalo, you can deliver all types of waste and also for several years is running the facility for the collection of waste oils by calling toll-Mandatory Consortium of Used Oils (CO.OU): 800 863 048, or by directly contacting the Area Manager for the withdrawal, "ITRO.FER" Ltd. in Montesilvano, the number 085 4682035.

Therefore, in addition to asking the Municipal Police and the police to intensify checks on the territory, I appeal to citizens to denounce to the competent authorities who break the law by reporting license plate numbers and taking pictures with the cellular those who commit crimes against the environment and public health.

addition, in order to combat more effectively the phenomenon of "illegal dumping", I asked for and received assurances from Mayor Ricci large that this year will allocate the funds necessary for the activation of a service of "environmental monitoring" to purchase and installation of cameras day and night in order to monitor those areas that have always been the ideal place to dispose, so undisturbed, waste of all kinds.
